Telus Cup:
It was a rough weekend for the Halifax Macs but they played their heart out for Atlantic Canada finishing the tournament 1-3-1 and failed to advance to the round robin. For the Toronto Nationals, the only team Halifax beat during the tournament ended up winning the Telus Cup, beating the Cantonniers de Magog 2-1 in double overtime.
U-18 World Hockey Championship:
Projected #1 pick in this year’s NHL draft, Jack Hughes broke some records over the weekend en-route to winning bronze with the United States. Jack scored 3 points as the Americans beat Team Canada 5-2 to win the bronze. With those 3 points, Jack Hughes broke Alexander Ovechkins record for points in the U-18 tournament with 32 in 2 years. Canada finished 4th.
The Gold Medal game between the Russians and the Swedes was fast paced and showed a lot of skill, but no one was better than Lucas Raymond from Sweden, he completed his hat-trick in OT to lift Sweden to their first ever gold medal at the U-18’s defeating Team Russia 4-3.
QMJHL:
The President Cup Finals are set,
The Halifax Mooseheads will face off against the Ryoun Noranda Huskies to see who will lift the Presidents Cup, that series starts this Thursday.
MLB:
The Rays scored 2 in the first and 2 in the second and added one more in the 9th to get their 18th win of the year, upending the Red Sox 5-2.
The Chicago Cubs are 2 games over .500, last night they scored 3 in the 15th inning to beat the Diamondbacks 6-5.
The Toronto Blue Jays stunned the Oakland A’s last night. The teams were tied in the 11th inning when Oakland scored 3 runs, the Blue Jays took the field down by 3, so they scored 4 to defeat the A’s 5-4.
Guerrero Jr. went 1-4 with a strikeout.
NBA:
2 games in the NBA last night.
The Celtics take a 1-0 series lead on the Bucks with a 112-90 win.
The Warriors also took a 1-0 series lead, they beat the Rockets 104-100.
Tonight it’s game 1 between Portland and Denver.
The Toronto Raptors will tangle with the 76ers, Toronto has a 1-0 series lead.
NHL:
The Carolina Hurricanes came out of the 3rd period gate down by 1 goal and on fire. They scored 2 quick goals in less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead over the Islanders and they wouldn’t look back. The Hurricanes ended up getting the 2-1 win and will now take a 2-0 series lead back to Raleigh for game 3. Warren Foegele and Nino Niederreiter (GWG) scored for the Canes. Mathew Barzal scored for the Islanders. Curtis McElhinney stopped all 17-shots to earn his first playoff win, while Petr Mrazek made 9-saves before leaving the game.
The Colorado Avalanche evened their series with the Sharks at 1-1 last night with a 4-3 victory. Nathan MacKinnon scored the game winner late in the 3rd period for the Avalanche.
