MONTHLY BUS-PASS PRICES RELEASED FOR PICTOU COUNTY TRANSIT

Hot on the heels of last week’s news from local MP Sean Fraser about the upcoming Pictou County Transit service, the Towns of New Glasgow and Stellarton have added new detail. The two towns have contracted CHAD Transit to manage Pictou County Transit, and provide a back-up bus as needed.
The fare to board the bus will be $3. A day pass will be $7.50, allowing you to board and un-board as many times as you like in one day with a day pass. Monthly passes are $70 for people ages 14—64, and they’re $60 for Seniors (65+) along with students at Pictou County high schools and the NSCC. Children ages 6 -13 can get a monthly bus pass for just $40, while children under five ride free.
The fixed stops will be Aberdeen Business Centre, New Glasgow Library, North End Rec Centre, Westside Shopping Plaza, Highland Square Mall, Pictou County Wellness Centre, the NSCC, the corner of Foord Street and Queen Street (near Tim Hortons), and the corner of East River Road and Pine Street (across the street from the Aberdeen hospital).
In addition to the fixed stops, they’re setting up a system of flag stops along the bus route, allowing clients to flag the bus down to stop over major parts of the route. Flag stops will be available everywhere except on the busiest streets, examples of where they won’t be available are East River Road, Foord Street, Acadia Avenue and most of Westville Road.
Over the next month Pictou County Transit will be launching a website and Facebook page with a full explanation and a map of where the bus will be running and its fixed stops.

The families of victims of last year’s criminal shooting spree by the man known as the Portapique killer are now suing the gunman’s spouse, her brother and her brother-in-law as defendants. The families claim the trio providing gas and ammunition to the killer was something they “knew, or ought to have known” would result in death. Documents filed with the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia add the names of Lisa Banfield, James Blair Banfield and Brian Brewster in the notice seeking damages for deaths, property destruction and injuries. The families are also suing the shooter’s estate. Lisa Banfield is also suing the gunman’s estate in a separate case. (Cdn Press Photo, Andrew Vaughan)

An 18-year-old man who faces charges from a serious crash in Dartmouth that left two people with life-threatening injuries over the weekend is slated to face a bail hearing today, and a search of his name in court records shows he’s getting to be well-known for alcohol related problems. This is the third time Brandon James Crombie has been charged with impaired driving in six months. The most recent incident relates to a crash on Highway 111 in Dartmouth near the Portland street exit on the weekend.

RCMP say two men are facing charges following an altercation at a home in Eastern Passage on January 31st.
Police were alerted by an emergency call that Sunday evening and found an injured man on the side of the road, and a second injured man in a nearby driveway. Evidence shows one man was visiting the homeowner and struck him on the head with a baseball bat before threatening other occupants and then leaving. After that, it appears the homeowner struck the visitor with his vehicle as he was walking on the side of the road.
RCMP say 41-year old James Eanis Phillip Collins is facing four charges, including attempted murder, and 28-year old Tyler John Wayne Beaton of Dartmouth is facing four charges, including assault with a weapon. They’re both due in court this month on separate dates.

Yesterday’s snowfall definitely qualifies as the largest snowstorm of the year.
Official numbers peg the snowfall measured at Greenwood at 35 cms, the same as what was measured in Truro and New Glasgow. Wolfville’s volunteers in the weather system picked up snowfall totals closer to 45 and even 50 cms, although precise measurements aren’t always completely precise in some areas because of the wind. But if your back is sore from shovelling. If you were anywhere from Northern Ontario to the interior of B-C this week, overnight lows are dipping into the minus 30’s with daytime highs in places like Calgary and Regina in the range of -25 to -27 for the next few days.
