Nova Scotia’s premier says he is disgusted over a pastor in Amherst who he says tried to minimize the deadly COVID-19 outbreak that resulted from a religious gathering last month. Tim Houston says it was wrong for Robert Smith, pastor of the Gospel Light Baptist Church, to downplay the seriousness of what happened at a long-term care home in Pugwash during a video sermon that had been posted to Facebook. The pastor has been fined 24-hundred dollars for violating COVID-19 rules during the multi-day event he organized in the Amherst area. Houston told reporters the outbreak was preventable and he alleged the religious event showed a “complete disregard” for public health.
The province reported 20 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday — including six cases each in the northern and western health zones and eight in the central region. Health officials say the new cases are evidence of limited community spread in Halifax and northern Nova Scotia. But they say no new cases are being reported at a long-term care home in Pugwash where 31 residents and 10 staff have tested positive for COVID-19, including two residents who have died. The number of active cases in the province has dropped to 236 due to 36 recoveries, with 17 people in hospital, including seven in intensive care.
Nova Scotia Public Works Minister Kim Masland says she has tested positive for COVID-19 even though she is fully vaccinated. Masland says she got tested after feeling unwell on Sunday and she was confirmed to have COVID-19 today. She says she doesn’t know how she contracted the disease but says she is suffering only mild symptoms due to her vaccination status.

County council discusses housing crisis during recent meeting

The housing crisis in Pictou County was a topic of discussion during Monday’s monthly property meeting. Warden Robert Parker said he recently attended a meeting with other municipal leaders as well as provincial and federal representatives to discuss housing challenges and the need for both short- and long-term solutions. In the short-term, he says agreements have been reached with three hotels where the province will pay for rooms if necessary for someone who has no other place to stay. Also, the local homeless shelter, Viola’s Place, is able to accommodate eight people per night with the hopes of soon expanding its shelter spaces. Warden Parker says it is good to see things happening in the short-term but long-term solutions are needed.
Municipality of Pictou County Council will once again be asking the provincial government to review its requirements for electronic speed signs. Council agreed Monday to send in a list of sites it would like to see electronic speed signs placed between May and October, including areas that don’t meet provincial requirements that signs be placed in areas where there is a change in the speed limit. The Municipality has four electronic speed signs and site locations recommended by council are given to the province for permit approval.
