Fall storm battering N.S. with heavy rain, strong winds

There’s rainfall and wind warnings both in effect for Pictou County, with heavy rains giving another 60 to 80 mm. Wind southeast 50 km/h gusting to 80 except gusting to 100 over exposed areas. Those winds should diminish to 50km/h later this morning.
Environment Canada has issued a gale warning for this morning, so Northumberland Ferries has cancelled the 6:30am crossing from Wood Islands and the 8:00am sailing from Caribou. Sailings will resume starting at 9:30am from Wood Islands.
RCMP charge Pictou Landing man in historical sexual assault case

Pictou County District RCMP have charged a Pictou Landing First Nation man in a historical sexual assault investigation. On August 13th, police received a complaint of a sexual assault that had occurred approximately 15 years ago on New Years Day. The victim was either 11 or 12 at the time, and following New Years Eve celebrations, she had gone to sleep for the night. She was then awoken by a man who allegedly sexually assaulted her. The man was 21 or 22 years old at the time. On October 28th, 35-year old Gary Daniel Denny of Pictou Landing First Nation was arrested without incident. Denny was charged with Sexual Assault and Sexual Interference. He’s been released on conditions and will appear in Pictou Provincial Court on December 13th.
RCMP searching community in Colchester County for wanted man

Colchester County District RCMP are searching the Nuttby area for a man who is wanted on an arrest warrant for offences related to intimate partner violence and other criminal offences. On Monday morning at approximately 7:15a.m., police responded to a report of a man who was making threats to harm a woman and himself. Police learned that the man was believed to be in possession of a firearm and had driven into the woods in Nuttby on a green ATV. Police determined that the man is 26-year old Michael Roland Sinton of Upper Brookside, who is the subject of an arrest warrant issued on October 20th. Sinton is wanted on multiple charges, including Assault, Uttering Threats, Unlawful Confinement, Mischief, Break and Enter with Intent, and for offences related to operation of a motor vehicle. Sinton is described as 5-foot-7, 180 pounds with reddish facial hair and green eyes.

On Monday, Nova Scotia reported one death related to COVID-19 — a man in his 90s in Western Zone died. The province also reported 60 new cases of COVID-19 and 88 recoveries since the last update on Friday. There were no new cases reported Monday at East Cumberland Lodge, a long-term care home in Pugwash. A total of 32 residents and 10 staff members at the home have tested positive, and three of the infected residents have died. As of today, Nova Scotia has 193 active cases of COVID-19. Of those, 16 people are in hospital, including seven in ICU.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says he got an “enthusiastic response” when he met with the prime minister today to discuss health care, immigration and the environment. Houston says he specifically pressed Justin Trudeau for federal help on the five-billion-dollar Atlantic Loop energy grid proposal that is a big part of getting the region off coal. He also requested support for a 70-million-dollar pilot project to increase access to mental health supports in communities across Nova Scotia. Houston says he was encouraged by what he heard in the Ottawa meeting even though he didn’t come away with any commitments. (The Canadian Press)
Pictou County Transit to host official grand launch

On November 29, Pictou County Transit will be hosting its official grand launch at Summer Street Industries on Park Street in New Glasgow. The event will celebrate the launch of transit services in New Glasgow and Stellarton. Pictou County Transit Manager Danny MacGillivray says they began operating the bus back in the spring during a COVID-19 lockdown, so they needed to wait until restrictions were lessened.” Although the bus began operating during the pandemic following all restrictions, MacGillivray is very pleased with the service and ridership to date, saying it’s better than anticipated, and the financials are good. He adds that both Pictou County Transit and the province are happy with the community uptake.

The Fundy Highland U15AA Stars remain undefeated after picking up 4 more points this past weekend in 2 games against the Quad County Whitecaps. It was a close 3-2 win on Saturday, and then a 5-1 victory on Sunday.
