That includes areas along the northeastern coast of New Brunswick, the north shore of PEI, the western coast of Cape Breton, and part of the Northumberland Strait. Nova Scotia municipalities reviewing policing models as RCMP costs rise
The president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities says the rising cost of RCMP services is changing the conversation around policing. Amanda McDougall, who is also mayor of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, says many town councils that contract policing to the RCMP are concerned about how they will pay for it. The province recently passed down more than $20 million in increased policing costs to municipalities that use the RCMP, leading to an average rise of 11 per cent per jurisdiction for the 2022-23 fiscal year. According to the province, there are currently five municipalities that have endorsed formal reviews of their policing model. They include the Municipality of the County of Colchester, the Municipality of Cumberland, Town of Wolfville, Halifax Regional Municipality, and Eskasoni.
RCMP warning public about cyber-scam
Nova Scotia RCMP are warning of a cyber-scam targeting people in at least two different provinces using the name of a legitimate member of the force. Police don’t identify the provinces — but say a scammer or scammers are sending out e-mails in French indicating a person is being investigated by the RCMP for fraud and requesting personal and banking information. They say the emails provide contact information with the name of a legitimate Nova Scotia R-C-M-P officer but the e-mail address and phone number included are fraudulent. The Mounties are reminding the public that police don’t inform individuals of an investigation by e-mail.
