Stellarton’s Water Treatment Plant is beginning a new treatment plan that should enhance overall water taste and odour quality – especially during the early summer months. Each year, the Town has an issue with an earthy taste and smell to the water supply, which is a result of elevated MIB and Geosmin levels in the East River in early summer. The two are naturally occurring compounds that are not toxic or harmful to people. Geosmin is also responsible for the earthy taste that’s noticeable in beets. Stellarton’s Water Treatment Plan intends to conduct a pilot program which involves the addition of a nationally approved water treatment chemical for an 8-week period beginning in late May through to July.
