It was one year ago the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc First Nation announced unmarked graves believed to contain the remains of hundreds of children were discovered at the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, B-C. A daylong ceremony marking Monday’s anniversary included prayers, drumming and speeches, including from Governor General Mary Simon, who said no child deserved to be treated so cruelly.
The public inquiry into Nova Scotia’s mass shooting has already spent 25.6 million dollars on its investigation into the 2020 rampage. Costs are shared between the federal and provincial governments for the inquiry that was established in October 2020 and started public proceedings on February 22nd this year. The inquiry is probing the causes and circumstances arising from the shooting deaths of 22 people over 13 hours by a gunman driving a replica police vehicle. It is expected to recommend ways to help prevent and respond to similar incidents in the future in a final report due November 1st.

Dartmouth M-L-A Claudia Chender is the unopposed candidate running to be the next leader of Nova Scotia’s New Democratic Party. Chender, a lawyer who was first elected in 2017, says in an interview she’s humbled by the support from the N-D-P, which had just one registered leadership contender when the deadline passed on the weekend. While she is the only candidate, Chender cannot be confirmed as leader until a party vote that wraps up at the N-D-P convention on June 25th. Until then, Chender says she will continue to travel the province and speak to as many members as possible in hopes of earning trust.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre in Dartmouth will present a general outlook for the coming 2022 hurricane season this morning (Tuesday). The season begins on June 1st and lasts through the end of November. It appears it will be an active season for a seventh straight year. Colorado State University has already issued its pre-season forecast with 19 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.
