Some people in Pictou County are still in the dark as we approach a week since Hurricane Fiona passed through Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia Power has been slowly restoring power with help from linesmen from the United states and other provinces, while dealing with broken power poles, trees on power lines, and other damage to equipment. Nova Scotia Powers website reports that around 80,000 customers are still without power in the province, around 14,000 of those are in the Pictou County Area.
A newly released document shows the Canada Border Services Agency had grown suspicious about the man that killed 22 people in the April 2020 mass shooting. The document is part of the material released by the Mass Casualty Commission last week as it wrapped up its public hearings into the massacre. Him and his partner, Lisa Banfield, were placed on the CBSA’s Frequent Flyer list in 2010 because of their recurring trips to the Caribbean. Information provided to the Mass Casualty Commission showed that RCMP would not have been aware that he was on the CBSA’s radar because the two agencies did not share such information. He was selected twice in 2010 at Halifax Stanfield International Airport for a secondary examination, but nothing was found in either one and they were taken off the list.
The woman who went missing earlier this month in Bible Hill has been found deceased. The RCMP says 32-year-old Cynthia Flemming was last seen in late August and reported missing from the Bible Hill area on September 1st. Cpl. Chris Marshall said the RCMP’s northeast major crime unit are still looking into the circumstances that led to her disappearance and death. At this time Police do not deem her death suspicious, but that could change as they continue to investigate. The investigation is being assisted by the Truro Police Service and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner’s Office.
All CCRCE Schools and offices will be closed for the remainder of the week as Hurricane cleanup and power restoration efforts continue. NSCC has also cancelled all classes and services for the remainder of the week, but the building will be open today as a comfort centre for anyone who is still without power.
