The inquiry investigating the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting has released emails detailing conflict of interest concerns raised about two members assigned last year to an R-C-M-P team providing information to the inquiry.
The emails focus on the husbands of Assistant Commissioner Lee Bergerman, the commanding officer in Nova Scotia at the time, and Halifax R-C-M-P Chief Supt. Janis Gray.
Gray’s husband — Chief Superintendent John Robin — was tasked with leading the information gathering team, where he was to work alongside retired R-C-M-P staff sergeant Mike Butcher, who is Bergerman’s husband.
Both men were ultimately removed from the inquiry team last July.
A new report says Nova Scotia’s access and privacy laws are in need of a complete overhaul.
Information and privacy commissioner Tricia Ralph says the legislation hasn’t been updated in almost 30 years, meaning the laws aren’t up to the task of protecting access and privacy rights.
Ralph says a comprehensive review is in order, followed by substantial changes to bring the act in line with modern access and privacy laws.
However, she points out the current government gave the justice minister a mandate to amend the act just over a year ago, but very little has been done since then.
