The president of Nova Scotia Power says proposed legislation limiting power rate increases would jeopardize the province’s goal of getting off coal by 2030.
Peter Gregg says the bill would restrict the utility’s ability to make the immediate investments needed to strengthen the system and move to renewable sources of energy.
Gregg told legislators that they have a choice to make and they can’t logically support both the proposed bill and the province’s climate goals.
Nova Scotia Power is currently asking the province’s regulator for a rate increase of nearly 14 per cent over the next two years, while the government’s bill would cap hikes at 1.8 per cent over the next two years — excluding increases due to fuel costs.

Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair has told a Commons committee he did not interfere in a police investigation into the Nova Scotia mass shooting of April 2020.
Blair, who was public safety minister at the time, says he has never directed police to release information pertaining to an investigation, nor did he in this case.
The Conservatives have called for Blair and R-C-M-P Commissioner Brenda Lucki to resign following the revelation she told senior staff in Nova Scotia that her desire to share basic information about the killer’s firearms was in response to a request from a minister’s office.
She did not specify which minister.
