Almost seven-million dollars will be spent building a new community hub in New Glasgow. The provincial government announced the project, saying it will kick in two-million dollars — the federal government will contribute 3.9 million dollars and the municipality will make up the rest. The town’s library will be retrofitted to become the New Glasgow Destination Centre, which will create a new space for community activities and programs.Officials say the project will provide space for programs and services for seniors, newcomers, up-and-coming artists and non-profit organizations.
New Glasgow Regional Police and Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers are looking for help in identifying a Black Nissan SUV and the suspects responsible for the theft of several tools.Early in the morning on Thursday, November 3rd, suspects driving a black Nissan SUV stole a large quantity of tools valued at over $5000 from a trailer that was parked in the Church of the Nazarene Parking Lot on Duke Street in Trenton. New Glasgow Regional Police ask that anyone who has any information about the Black Nissan SUV or those responsible for the theft to contact New Glasgow Regional Police or Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.
Nova Scotia Power’s parent company Emera Inc. is putting capital spending on clean energy projects on hold as it works through the consequences of the province’s legislated rate cap. Emera chief executive Scott Balfour says while the company will continue to make investments in safety and reliability of its network, it won’t be able to spend on other projects in Nova Scotia due to the cap. The company had applied for a nearly 14 per cent rate hike over two years, but the province stepped in to limit the power rate increase to 1.8 per cent over the next two years, excluding increases linked to fuel costs. Balfour made the comments during a conference call, which reported a third-quarter profit of 167 million dollars as part of the utility’s latest financial results.
Cape Breton University wants to open a new medical school. The university’s vice-president of finance, Gord MacInnis, says C-B-U wants to open the school by 2025. The idea was first floated in 2012, but that plan never took off. MacInnis says the university recently consulted local physicians and about 80 community leaders — and he says all supported the idea.
About 16-hundred part-time instructors and teaching assistants at Dalhousie University in Halifax have ratified a new contract following a three-week strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees says members of Local 3912 voted 77 per cent in favour of a four-year collective agreement. The deal includes a 23 per cent wage increase over four years for new part-time academic instructors And there’s a 23 per cent hourly pay increase over four years for all teaching assistants.
