Pictou County District RCMP said the 77-year-old man who went missing from king’s Head yesterday has been located and is safe.
Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault has confirmed that the federal consumer carbon price will be imposed next summer in Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
The change follows a review that determined provincial systems in the three provinces no longer meet stronger federal carbon-pricing rules that kick in next year.
By next July, only New Brunswick, Quebec and British Columbia will have provincial carbon-pricing systems for individuals and businesses that have lower levels of emissions.
Residents of Nova Scotia, PEI, and Newfoundland and Labrador will get quarterly rebate cheques, but exemptions on home heating oil will be eliminated.
Premier Tim Houston issued a statement expressing his “profound disappointment in the decision by the Government of Canada to impose a carbon tax on Nova Scotians at a time when fuel and heating costs are at an all-time high and many Nova Scotians are struggling.”
Houston says Nova Scotia supports action on climate change but doesn’t support a carbon tax of any amount on home heating oil at this time.
The Premier says it’s incomprehensible to him that the federal government doesn’t agree.
Houston says a new fuel tax when there are record highs at the pumps also makes no sense.
He adds that Ottawa has said this is intended to change behaviour, but even with today’s prices, we aren’t seeing any significant change because people in rural communities need to drive — they have no other options.
The Nova Scotia government says it’s adopting the federal housing agency’s broader definition of a first-time homebuyer for the provincial Down Payment Assistance Program.
In addition to those who’ve never bought a home before, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation definition considers changing life circumstances and includes people who may have co-owned a home in the past with a partner and are now separated or divorced.
The province says the broader definition means more people who may need help to buy a home will be included under the down payment assistance program.
