There is an extreme cold warning in effect for Pictou County. An arctic airmass will combine with strong winds to give very cold conditions. Windchill temperatures of minus 35 to minus 42 are expected to develop tonight and persist into late Saturday morning, before warming up slightly in the afternoon. Environment Canada says to cover up if you are planning on being outside, because frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin. Also watch out for cold related symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, and numbness and colour change in your fingers and toes. Extreme cold warnings are issued when a very cold temperatures or windchill creates and elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
Nova Scotia regulators approved a 14% electricity rate hike, ignoring Premier Tim Houston’s Calls to reject it. Rates are planned to rise around 6.9% each year in 2023 and 2024. The Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board issued the 203-page decision yesterday, and the board said the approval was in public interest and was “reasonable and appropriate.”
Nova Scotia is reporting three new COVID-19 related deaths in the weekly update. The province is also recording five deaths from previous reporting periods. The data released in yesterdays report covers January 24th-30th.
Nestle Canada says it is winding down its frozen meals and pizza business in Canada. Over the next six months Delissio, Stouffer’s. Lean Cuisine, and Life Cuisine will be disappearing from Canadian grocery stores. The company said the reason for them pulling these items off the shelves is because they are focusing on categories that support long-term business growth, including confectionary, coffee, ice cream, and pet food
Both Shubenacadie Sam and Lucy the Lobster Have predicted what the rest of the Winter will look like for Nova Scotia. Both animals made their predictions at their homes at Shubenacadie Wild Life Park and the Cape Sable Island Causeway. They are both in agreement that they saw their shadows and we are expected to have 6 more weeks of winter is hitting Nova Scotia.
