Premier Tim Houston and the other Atlantic premiers have come up with a system to make it easier for doctors within the region to practice in any of the four provinces. PEI Premier Dennis King hosted a meeting of the Atlantic Premiers in Charlottetown on Monday and announced the creation of the new Atlantic Physician Register. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey said there’s nothing preventing doctors from working outside their home province, but the process of getting permission to do so can be onerous, even within the Atlantic region. Furey, an orthopedic trauma surgeon, says the registry will eliminate paperwork for doctors and surgeons who quickly need to fill gaps in the health-care system. The Premiers anticipate the Atlantic Physician Register will be in place by May 1st.
