Pictou County is under a Special Weather Statement with some significant snow on the way.
The snow is expected to begin this evening giving 10 to 15 centimetres.
The snow should end Friday morning.
Nova Scotia’s provincial Progressive Conservative government is set to present its second budget today.
Finance and Treasury Board Minister Allan MacMaster is scheduled to table the 2023-24 budget shortly after 1 p-m.
The Tim Houston government has made increased spending on health care a top priority since being elected in August 2021.
It has also projected a series of deficits to help cope with those rising costs.
The Nova Scotia government is extending a temporary cap on rent increases to the end of 2025, but is raising it next year to five per cent.
Colton LeBlanc, Minister of Service Nova Scotia, says the move is aimed at balancing the rights and needs of tenants and landlords.
The current two per cent rent cap introduced by the previous Liberal government in November 2020 will be in place until the end of the year.
LeBlanc says extending the cap by two years will protect renters and also help landlords.
The Nova Scotia’s Teachers Union has asked for increased staffing and a review of mental health assistance for students in the wake of a double stabbing at a Halifax high school earlier this week.
President Ryan Lutes says the stabbing at Charles P. Allen High School has sparked a wider conversation about improving access to mental health supports for students.
He also asked government to reverse staffing cuts that were made at the city’s most populated high schools last year.
The Nova Scotia government is boosting the maximum fine that Nova Scotia Power could face after outages.
Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton says the maximum penalty has been raised from one-million dollars to 25-million to hold the private utility “more accountable” for performance issues and power outages.
Rushton says any actual penalties against the private utility will be decided in regulations or by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.
Nova Scotia Power was fined a total of 625-thousand dollars between 2017 and 2021 – including 375-thousand dollars in 2021 for missing four of its 13 performance targets.
