The federal government has announced a contribution of $125,000 to the Pictou County Wellness Centre Building Authority. That investment is to help the organization host the BOOST National, a major 2023 Grand Slam of Curling event, at the Pictou County Wellness Centre. The funds will see special effects lighting installed in the main arenas; improvements to the atrium; new audio-visual equipment to improve international broadcast quality; and updates to the WiFi network. There will also be ramps and automated door openers installed for better accessibility.
Food Banks Canada is calling for much-needed action from all levels of government as the organization has released its inaugural Poverty Report Cards, which show that poverty in Canada is deepening, and impacting low-income and vulnerable people in every region of the country. According to the report cards, more than 42% of people across Canada feel financially worse off compared to last year; 18.4% are experiencing food insecurity and almost 30% are coping with an inadequate standard of living. Food Banks Canada gives Nova Scotia a grade of F, the lowest grade in the country, and the only F that was handed out.
Nova Scotia’s auditor general says the province’s ambulance service is still spending too much time transferring patients at hospitals.In a new report, Kim Adair says that in 2022, paramedics on average spent a quarter of their working hours in emergency department hallways waiting to transfer their patients.As a result, Adair says the average wait time for an ambulance in 2022 rose from 14 minutes to 25 minutes _ an increase of 79 per cent.She says the longer response times to emergency calls are putting patients at risk.
The Nova Scotia R-C-M-P say an international investigation has disrupted a transnational criminal organization and drug pipeline into the province.The Mounties held a news conference Tuesday in Halifax to announce that the 16-month investigation culminated in the arrest last month of 37-year-old Ahmed El Kady, who police say was carrying 433 kilograms of cocaine destined for Canada.El Kady was arrested in Buffalo, New York, by officers with Homeland Security Investigations.El Kady is from Hamilton, Ontario, but the R-C-M-P say he has ties to Nova Scotia’s drug trade.
The federal Conservatives are accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of throwing House Speaker Anthony Rota under the bus after Rota invited a man who fought for the Nazis to attend a speech by Ukraine’s president in Parliament.The Tories say Trudeau should also take responsibility for the invitation.Rota announced his resignation Tuesday after meeting with House leaders for the main federal parties.Trudeau was not present in the House when Rota announced his resignation, but earlier called the mistake deeply embarrassing.
The Town of New Glasgow is advising that paving will take place on Westville Road starting today and continue until completed. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes whenever possible.
