New Glasgow Regional Police officers and police throughout Pictou County will be out patrolling streets tonight during Halloween.
Police are offering some key safety tips:
· Kids should trick-or-treat in groups or with their parents or guardians. If older kids go alone, designate areas for them to stay within, and set a time limit.
· Walk on well-lit streets and avoid houses that do not have lights on.
· Watch for traffic when you cross the street.
· Encourage your children to choose light-colored costumes or costumes with reflective strips.
· Check the candy your child brings home – throw out anything that is opened check thoroughly.
· Drive with extra caution when driving in residential neighborhoods
A Special Weather Statement has been issued as snow is expected for most of Nova Scotia on Wednesday.
Total snowfall of 5 to 10 cm is expected, with possibly higher amounts in higher, inland areas.
The suspect in an alleged axe attack in Thorburn was taken into police custody on Monday afternoon.
R-C-M-P had issued an emergency alert Monday morning after the attack at a home on Greenwood St. in Thorburn.
Police say one person suffered serious injuries, and the victim and suspect do know each other.
Police began a search for 61-year old John Douglas Cress, who they said had fled into woods.
Assisting in the search were the RCMP’s Colchester County District, Emergency Response Team, Police Dog Services and Air Services.
Police later advised on Monday afternoon that Cress had been arrested without incident.
Nova Scotia RCMP say that between July and September, 349 people were charged with offences related to impaired driving.
The latest statistics from the Mounties show the majority were for drivers impaired by alcohol, with 182 charges.
Another 19 charges were laid during that time for drivers impaired by drugs.
R-C-M-P issued 128 licence suspensions for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

A sports note, the Maritime Junior Hockey League game scheduled for Thursday between the Truro Bearcats and the Pictou County Weeks Crushers at the Pictou County Wellness Centre has been postponed due to rink availability.
An announcement will be made when the game is rescheduled.
