The Federal Government and the Towns of New Glasgow, Pictou and Westville announced an agreement to fast track a combined total of over 190 homes over the next three years. This work will help spur the construction of more than 2,100 homes over the next decade. The agreements under the Housing Accelerator Fund will provide nearly $5.6 million to eliminate barriers to building needed housing, faster. New Glasgow will receive almost $3.3 million to support its Action Plan which commits to seven local initiatives aimed at helping meet housing needs. Pictou will receive more than $775,000 to support its Action Plan; and Westville will receive over $1.5 million to support its Action Plan.
Federal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says pharmacare will not jeopardize Canada’s fiscal standing as the federal government intends to abide by spending rules it pledged in the fall.
The N-D-P confirmed Friday it reached a deal on pharmacare with the Liberals, which would allow every Canadian with a health card to access free diabetes medication and birth control.
The coverage is to be included in the first piece of a national pharmacare program — a key pillar of the supply-and-confidence agreement between the two parties — with legislation expected to be
introduced in the House of Commons this week.
The deadline to vacate some Halifax homeless encampments is today.
The city had asked earlier this month that unhoused people staying in tents at five of 11 authorized encampments leave by Monday.
It said the encampments, including one at the downtown Grand Parade, pose a safety risk and that better options are available.
The city said on Friday that 25 of the approximately 55 people staying at the five encampments have accepted indoor shelter.
Canada’s public health agency is asking people to check immunization records, following a rise in measles cases.
It says it “strongly advises” everyone to check they’re fully immunized against measles, especially before travelling.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says it is concerned that the global surge in measles activity, combined with the decline in measles vaccine coverage among school-aged children in Canada, could lead to more imported cases, potentially resulting in transmission of measles in communities in Canada.
The agency says it is aware of six cases of measles so far in Canada in 2024.
