The R-C-M-P has released a strategy it says is aimed at “meaningful change” resulting from their response to the public inquiry into the 2020 mass shooting in Nova Scotia that claimed 22 lives. Commissioner Mike Duheme says the force is aware that its previous responses to other reviews and reports have “not always been fulsome.” Duheme also says the R-C-M-P hasn’t been transparent about the work they have done to change. The force says it’s created a so-called sector focused on reform, which represents a concrete demonstration of its commitment to change.
Nova Scotia’s Progressive Conservative government has unexpectedly announced it will index income assistance payments to keep up with inflation. The government’s move yesterday came as a surprise because it was not announced as part of the budget that was introduced on February 29th. Community Services Minister Brendan Maguire says the rate change – the first in three years – will be tied to the consumer price index and will rise by 2.5 per cent in the 2024-25 fiscal year. The change, which Maguire says amounts to about 35-dollars a month for people on low incomes, is to be implemented on July 1st with payments retroactive to April 1st.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says a protection fund and Bill of Rights for renters is coming. Making an announcement in Vancouver, the prime minister said renters matter, and young Canadians put a lot of their hard-earned money toward rent. He proposed that rental history be taken into account on credit scores, giving first-time buyers a better chance at getting a mortgage, with a lower interest rate. The measures are part of next month’s federal budget, set to be presented on April 16th.
