Ontario’s police watchdog says no criminal charges should be laid against two Mounties who mistakenly fired shots outside a Nova Scotia firehall while searching for the man responsible for the April 2020 mass shooting that claimed 22 lives.
The Special Investigations Unit says the inquiry heard that the man police believed to be the killer did not hear police yell “Show your hands!” before they opened fire — and he denied that he ducked and ran into the hall at that moment.
However, the S-I-U concluded that no criminal charges were warranted because the officers had reasonable grounds to believe that the man in their sights was the killer.
The Special Investigations Unit report says the new evidence does not point to a more incriminating scenario of what happened that day because it is reasonable to believe that both officers acted with justification.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is promising to keep the federal deficit from ballooning in Tuesday’s federal budget.
Freeland has also ruled out raising taxes on the middle class but won’t say if others are in for the same treatment.
Higher taxes on corporations would spark intense backlash from the business community and financial sector.
A former head of economic strategy and planning for Freeland says no one should be surprised if the federal government increases taxes, given all the demands they face to spend more.
