No injuries are reported from a fire Saturday night in New Glasgow. Shortly before 7:30pm, the Stellarton, Linacy, Trenton, and New Glasgow Fire Departments, Emergency Health Services, Nova Scotia Power and New Glasgow Regional Police all responded to a 911 call of a garage and house fire on Stellarton Road. There was extensive damage to the garage and home. Officials say the preliminary investigation indicates that the fire is not suspicious.
The provincial government says it has reached a tentative contract agreement with the province’s public school teachers, but the deal has yet to be ratified. The announcement late Friday follows up on an announcement on April 19th that confirmed the two sides had reached an agreement in principle on a potential deal. Premier Tim Houston says the tentative agreement responds to teachers’ concerns and improves classroom conditions. Earlier this month, members of the Nova Scotia Teachers Union voted 98 per cent in favour of a strike.
A ceremony was held outside the Nova Scotia legislature on the weekend to remember those who have died or were injured because of a workplace accident or work-related illness. The National Day of Mourning has been held every year since 1984 and is now observed in more than 100 countries. In 2023, 18 Nova Scotians died while at work, or because of work done in the past — and that includes seven traumatic injuries and 11 deaths caused by chronic injuries. Danny Cavanaugh, president of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, says the event underlines the importance of workplace safety.
A restructuring firm says several bidders have offered to buy all or part of the two companies that operate Atlantic Canada’s largest newspaper enterprise. Toronto-based K-S-V Restructuring Inc. said in a report that some of those non-binding offers, if accepted, would enable the deeply indebted SaltWire Network and The Halifax Herald companies to continue operating as viable businesses. K-S-V’s report does not say how many bids were received, the initial bidding deadline, and it doesn’t provide any details about who made the bids. Saltwire owns a number of news publications across Atlantic Canada including Halifax’s Chronicle Herald, and The News in New Glasgow.

A West Side Community Centre Field of Dreams Watch Party is being held on Tuesday. Last summer, the West Side Community Centre applied to the Jays Care Foundation Field of Dreams grant program with the hopes of building a small, sustainable baseball field for the T-ball program — and is one of the finalists in the grant program . Tuesday is when they learn if the application is successful. A Watch Party of the announcement is being held on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at the West Side Community Centre. Those attending are asked to wear their Blue Jays gear or dress in blue.
