The three major political parties have named their candidates for the upcoming byelection in Pictou West. The N-D-P will be represented by Melinda MacKenzie and the Liberals have named Mary Wooldridge-Elliot as their candidate. The Progressive Conservatives will be represented by Marco MacLeod. The byelection will be held on May 21st, and was called after longtime Progressive Conservative member of legislature Karla MacFarlane announced her retirement.
A third teenager is facing a charge of second-degree murder in the stabbing death last week of a Halifax high school student.
Sixteen-year-old Ahmad Al Marrach was found badly injured in a parking garage next to the Halifax Shopping Centre last Monday and later died in hospital.
Police say a 16-year-old suspect who was arrested last Monday and released is now also charged with second-degree-murder.
Two 14-year-olds appeared in youth court on Friday to face one count each of second-degree murder.
The latest figures compiled by a University of Toronto research group show Nova Scotia had the highest rate of food insecurity among the provinces last year. Proof assembled numbers from Statistics Canada indicating nearly 29 per cent of Nova Scotians lived in food insecure households in 2023. P-E-I had the second-highest rate in the country, with 28.6 per cent of Islanders in food insecure households. The figures show 26 per cent of people Newfoundland and Labrador and 25.6 per cent of New Brunswick residents worried about where their next meal might come from at some point last year.
