Wayne Munro and Jill Clausson-Munro of New Glasgow are $5-million richer, as they won the $5-million Classic Jackpot on the May 11th draw. They’ve played the same Lotto 6-49 numbers since 1986, and matched all 6 numbers for the big win.
While Jill recently retired from full-time work at the hospital, Wayne said the win will allow him do
the same from his job in car sales, although not right away.
The winning Lotto 6/49 ticket was purchased at Sobeys in New Glasgow, and the retailer will receive a one per cent seller’s prize.
Gasoline prices and diesel prices decreased overnight in Nova Scotia. Gasoline prices decreased by 3.8 cents per litre, leaving the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 176.7 cents per litre in the local area. Diesel prices decreased by 1.3 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for diesel at 175.3 cents per litre locally.
Officials with Nova Scotia’s Department of Community Services were unable to provide an update on progress for a child and youth office during an appearance before a legislature committee. They couldn’t tell the public accounts committee when a child and youth commissioner will be appointed or when the office is expected to be operational. Community Services Minister Brendan Maguire has said that he’d like to see the office established by the end of this year. Legislation creating the office was passed during the spring sitting of the legislature.
Nova Scotia has increased the fine for violating daily burn restrictions to 25-thousand dollars effective immediately. Premier Tim Houston says with the weather starting to get warmer and dryer he can’t stress enough the importance of preventing fires. Daily burn restrictions are in place from March 15th to October 15th to help prevent wildfires. Burning is not permitted anywhere in the province between 8 a-m and 2 p-m because that is often when the risk of wildfires is greatest.
Nova Scotia’s provincial parks start opening for the season this weekend.
More than a million people visited the parks last year, and there were 86-thousand nights booked for camping — despite many cancellations due to wildfires, storms and rain.
Park visitors are being reminded to be vigilant about wildfire prevention, and the government is reminding visitors that campfires and smoking are never allowed in day-use parks.
