The federal fisheries minister says allegations that the department’s officers arrested and dumped two Mi’kmaq fishers at a Nova Scotia gas station without shoes or phones are unacceptable. The Minister has now launched an external review into the officers’ conduct, as well as the department’s policies and practices. Two Indigenous men say they had to walk for about six hours before they could get help after they were arrested near Shelburne in March. The Nova Scotia N-D-P say renters in the province are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living, and government’s help for people struggling with affordability is falling short. In a statement, N-D-P leader Claudia Chender said skyrocketing rents have left many people without an affordable place to live, and Premier Tim Houston’s proposed solutions don’t come close to meeting people’s needs. She says the province’s rent supplement program is a Band-Aid fix that is leaving people at risk, and rent control and stronger renter protections are needed. Sylvia Cole, a Dartmouth resident and pensioner who spends more than 60 per cent of her income on rent, says she does not qualify for the province’s rent supplement program.
