Pictou County District RCMP is asking for the public’s help in its investigation of a crash that occurred in Lyons Brook. It happened on July 7th at approximately 7 p.m. on Hwy. 376. RCMP say a car travelling along the highway abruptly left the roadway, struck a power pole and came to rest in the ditch. A passenger in the vehicle, a 20-year-old McLellans Mountain woman, suffered serious injuries.
The driver and another passenger, who failed to remain at the scene of the collision, have since been identified by investigators as a 37-year-old Scotsburn man and a 20-year-old Westville woman.
As they investigate, Pictou County District RCMP would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash and the vehicle’s movements prior to the incident, as well as anyone who has video footage of the area.
Three people are dead and three injured after a head-on collision in western Cape Breton involving a pickup truck and a car.
R-C-M-P say the collision occurred early Saturday morning on Highway 19 near the community of Mabou.
The two young people in the car, both residents of Inverness County, died in the crash, and a passenger in the truck, a 71-year-old man from Utah, was taken to hospital where he later died of his injuries.
The other three people in the truck, also from Utah, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The federal and Nova Scotia governments are offering rent subsidies to people escaping domestic violence. Applications are now available at transition houses and other shelters for vulnerable people. Eligible families can receive up to fourteen-hundred dollars for an accommodation with three or more bedrooms. The province’s 11.3-million-dollar investment over four years will be matched by the Canadian government through the federal housing benefit.
The Nova Scotia government and Mi’kmaq people are suspending moose hunting in Cape Breton for three years after a significant drop in the moose population. A 2024 survey shows a drop in the moose population from fifteen-hundred to 835. Hunting, disease, and climate change are all factors believed to have contributed to the decline. Nova Scotia’s Natural Resources and Renewables department and Mi’kmaq people are working closely with local communities to plan for the population’s recovery.
