Buildings in Jasper, Alberta are burning, and the air quality has deteriorated to a level so bad that wildland firefighters have been forced to evacuate to a nearby town. Officials say the only people still in the mountain town are structural firefighters, who stayed behind to protect key infrastructure and save as many buildings as possible.
Pictou County District RCMP are investigating the theft of 16 trail cameras used by Nova Scotia Public Works to monitor wildlife.
It’s believed the thefts, which occurred along Hwy. 104 between Pictou and Antigonish, took place between June 12 and June 24.
Police say the type of camera stolen is a Reconyx Hyperfire 2 Professional Covert IR.
Anyone with information about these thefts is asked to contact the Pictou County District RCMP or Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.
The Nova Scotia RCMP’s Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Unit has charged an Antigonish man with child pornography offences. Last week, police executed a search warrant at a home in Antigonish, directed there after an electronic service provider notified law enforcement that child pornography was being uploaded to their service. As a result of the search and investigation, a 77-year old man has been charged with one count each of Transmitting Child Pornography, Possessing Child Pornography, and Accessing Child Pornography.
As it delivered another rate cut Wednesday, the Bank of Canada was sounding increasingly concerned about the risk of high interest rates slowing the economy and inflation by more than necessary. Economists widely expected the central bank to cut its key rate by a quarter point to 4.5 per cent. That’s because inflation is easing and the economy is weakening.
A new report is saying one third of workers in Atlantic Canada earn less than 20 dollars an hour, which is too low to keep up with the cost of living. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says raising the minimum wage to 20 dollars an hour is an important step to keep up with the cost of living. The think tank says Nova Scotia’s current minimum wage is more than 10 dollars below living wage in Halifax.
