This long holiday weekend will be a hot one. Environment Canada has issued a Heat warning for our area with an extended period of hot, humid weather expected through Monday. We’ll reach temperatures in the 28 to 29 degree range with the humidity making it feel more like 36 or 37.
There’s no change today in gasoline prices in Nova Scotia, while diesel prices went down slightly overnight. Gasoline prices remain the same with the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 172.4 cents per litre locally. Diesel prices decreased by 1.2 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for diesel at 172.6 cents per litre in the local area.
A Nova Scotia health union says shortages in ultrasound technicians in Nova Scotia’s central zone are causing year-long delays in getting images. The N-S-G-E-U says provincial wait times shows 90 per cent of Nova Scotians wait on average 320 days for an ultrasound. Staffers say long wait times are dangerous, as cancers and diseases can progress in the next stage. The Halifax Infirmary, Victoria General and Bayers Lake sites have five full time equivalent staff.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston issued a statement Thursday to acknowledge Emancipation Day. Thursday marked the anniversary of the British parliament’s decision to abolish slavery across its empire in 1834. The Slavery Abolition Act outlawed the owning, buying and selling of humans as property throughout the empire’s colonies, including Canada. Houston says it’s important for Nova Scotians to acknowledge the province’s part in the history of enslavement and to reflect on the impact of racism and injustice on our communities.
Nova Scotia is celebrating more than four centuries of Acadian culture and language over the month of August.
The province’s first Acadian Heritage Month began yesterday with a ceremonial raising of the Acadian flag at the legislature.
Premier Tim Houston and Arthur LeBlanc, the province’s first lieutenant-governor of Acadian descent, were on hand for the ceremony.
The month will see concerts and other gatherings in Acadian communities across the province.
At the Paris Olympics, Canada’s teenage swimming sensation Summer McIntosh set an Olympic record in winning another gold medal, this time in the women’s 200-metre butterfly. . American gymnastics star Simone Biles dazzled once again to win the gold medal in the women’s all-around final.
