The Pictou County Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit has charged three people as part of a drug trafficking investigation. On July 25, police searched a home on Gill Crt. in Pictou. Officers arrested a man and two women at the home and seized substances believed to be fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine and cocaine. Officers also seized a quantity of cash, drug paraphernalia and a BB style pellet gun made to resemble an automatic weapon. A 33-year old Pictou man, 28-year old Maclellan’s Brook woman, and 33-year old Scotsburn woman have each been charged with Possession of Cocaine for the Purposes of Trafficking, Possession of Fentanyl for the Purposes of Trafficking, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000.
The Canadian Hurricane Centre is keeping a close eye on the remnants of Hurricane Debby as it makes its way north. Debby is moving northward through the eastern United States and could impact the Maritimes, with heavy rainfall and high winds projected. Forecasts on Wednesday indicated Debby will drop its most of heavy rainfall just west of the Maritimes, but forecasters say an eastward wind could bring gusts and rain to the Atlantic provinces.
The Provincial Government is announcing new regulations on short-term rentals to try and address the urgent need for housing. Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Lohr says Nova Scotians need housing but many houses and apartments that could potentially be long-term homes are being rented on a short- term basis. The Short-Term Rentals Registration Act will include new registration requirements, host categories, rates and penalties. Possible fines for non-compliance range up to 100-thousand dollars.
A Nova Scotia judge is expected to decide today whether to approve Postmedia’s one-million-dollar bid to acquire Atlantic Canada’s largest newspaper chain. The court hearing in Halifax follows intense negotiations between the Toronto-based company and a union representing some workers at SaltWire and The Halifax Herald. The two insolvent companies are behind newspapers and online publications in Nova Scotia, P-E-I and Newfoundland and Labrador – including The News in New Glasgow. Postmedia has said the deal will fail unless the companies wind up their pension plans and change collective agreements in Halifax and Cape Breton.
The Town of New Glasgow is advising that there will be some road closures in effect from 6 a.m. today (Thursday) to 11 p.m. on Sunday to accommodate the Pictou County Ribfest:
-Riverside Parkway from MacLean Street to Dalhousie Street,
-Riverside Parkway from Dalhousie Street to George Street (Southbound lane closed, Northbound lane open)
