Pictou County District RCMP are investigating a tragic collision on Hwy 106 at Mount William. At about 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, the RCMP, fire services, and EHS all responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash on Hwy. 106 between the Trenton connector and Granton exit. Both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames when they arrived on scene. Three people — the driver of one vehicle and driver and passenger of the other vehicle — died at the scene. It’s early in the investigation and at this point police cannot provide more information about the vehicles involved or what led to the collision. Anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage of the incident, is asked to contact Pictou County District RCMP at 902-485-4333.
R-C-M-P say two people have been charged following a drug trafficking investigation that saw police search two homes on Martin Street in Antigonish on August 2nd. They say officers arrested and charged two people with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine at one of the houses, and allegedly seized dried psilocybin mushrooms, cash and drug paraphernalia. Police say a third person was arrested and released without charges at the second house where officers allegedly seized cocaine, a quantity of cash, two cell phones and a machete.
A Listeria outbreak connected to Great Value and Silk plant-based milks has now killed three people, with Ontario’s health ministry confirming the third death Monday. The Public Health Agency of Canada says there are 20 confirmed cases of people sickened by listeriosis in four provinces across Canada, including Nova Scotia. The Public Health Agency says people became sick between August 2023 and mid-July 2024.
The sister of a firefighter who died during a training exam at the Nova Scotia Firefighters School says the program needs an overhaul aimed at improving safety standards.
Skyler Blackie died in hospital on March 9th, 2019, after a fire extinguisher he was using exploded at the school on the outskirts of Halifax.
His sister, Jessica Gillis, last week launched a petition calling for reform, citing an audit that uncovered numerous safety infractions at the school.
A spokeswoman for the Labour Department says 22 high risk activities were noted by Occupational, Health and Safety officers.
The governments of Nova Scotia and Manitoba have signed a deal to cooperate to preserve and promote the French language and culture in both provinces. The four-year agreement was signed Friday. The agreement supports the development of a plan to identify initiatives in both provinces. Information will be shared on topics including French-language services, education, immigration, provincial and municipal government services, economic development, health care, tourism and culture.
