A spokeswoman says the department has been working with the school since it first requested a third-party assessment of the worksite last year. Sarah MacNeil says the safety branch issued a compliance order for 22 “high risk” activities in July and says when compliance wasn’t achieved, it issued a stop work order that “prohibits any high-risk training activities.” She says the stop work order will remain in place, and the activities cannot resume, until compliance is achieved.
An Environment Canada meteorologist says Newfoundland is expected to see major waves and rain today into tomorrow as Hurricane Ernesto makes its way through the region.
Chris Fogarty with the Canadian Hurricane Centre says the storm will weaken in intensity as it moves over the colder Newfoundland and Labrador waters.
Ernesto will likely bring large waves to the Avalon Peninsula and heavy rain in the St. John’s area that is expected to hit late this evening.
Fogarty says the timing of Ernesto’s arrival is expected to minimize damage, with the storm forecast to pass through the region at low tide
