Gasoline and diesel prices both decreased overnight in Nova Scotia. Gasoline prices decreased by 1.8 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for regular self-serve gasoline at 161.9 cents per litre in the local area. Diesel prices decreased by 1.5 cents per litre, putting the minimum pump price for diesel at 163.4 cents per litre locally.
Walkerville resident Monica Thomsen is announcing her candidacy for Councillor in District 9 in the Pictou County Municipal Council elections.
Thomson says her focus would be supporting recreational/comfort centers in Hillside and Linacy; improving active transportation routes; and making our communities more accessible. She also says a focus would be seeking funding and user groups like the Pictou County Trails Association to lead the necessary improvements to the Thorburn Spur Line Trail. Thomsen is the Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Trucking Safety Association.
The federal government has transferred more than 30-million dollars to Nova Scotia to help communities in the province invest in local infrastructure. The funding comes from the Canada Community-Building Fund, which provides communities with funding to develop infrastructure such as roads, energy systems or transit for future housing developments. The payment is the first of two expected this fiscal year, with the second set to arrive closer to the year’s end.
A 20-person firefighting crew from Atlantic Canada is heading for Winnipeg to help battle out-of-control wildfires. Nova Scotia is sending 12 firefighters who will team up with those from P-E-I, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador. The Nova Scotia crew left from Halifax Stanfield International Airport Thursday. Nova Scotia’s Department of Natural Resources says it’s sending a crew to help with the wildfire effort in western Canada for the fourth time this summer.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is asking the New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois to stop supporting the minority Liberal government and force an early election. Poilievre says Liberal policies are making life less affordable for Canadians. But Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland says the Conservatives are ignoring Canada’s recent economic successes, including the fact that inflation remains within the Bank of Canada’s target rate.
