Northumberland Ferries has announced that the MV Saaremaa will not be returning to service between Caribou and Wood Islands this season. The ferry, leased from Quebec company STQ for the PEI-Nova Scotia service, has not been sailing since early in September due to engine issues. On Monday, Northumberland Ferries General Manager Jeff Joyce provided an update, saying that STQ has discovered additional mechanical issues with Saaremaa’s main engines. Due to those issues, the MV Saaremaa will not be returning to service between Wood Islands and Caribou on Saturday as had been hoped. Once the repairs are completed, it will head back to Quebec. Meanwhile, the repair work on MV Confederation’s bow visor continues. Northumberland Ferries has turned to Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security to determine if the vessel could be safely operated without the bow visor. If that’s not possible, MV Confederation’s return to service remains scheduled for December 9th.
