The president of Doctors Nova Scotia says a retirement benefits program announced Wednesday is expected to attract new physicians to the province. In the first five years of practice, doctors can receive five-thousand-dollars annually to put toward their retirement savings without making matching contributions. Doctors who have practiced between five and 15 years can receive up to 10-thousand-dollars annually. Health department officials say doctors can invest the money in their choice of retirement funds, whether they be tax free savings accounts, R-R-S-Ps or an independent pension fund.
As part of Operation Impact over the Thanksgiving weekend, New Glasgow Regional Police charged two impaired drivers and charged four other drivers under the Motor Vehicle Act. In one incident, police stopped a motorcycle that had gone through a stop sign, with a passenger on the back of the bike who was not wearing a helmet. The 21-year old man driving the motorcycle was charged with Impaired and failing to stop at a stop sign. The passenger was charged for failing to wear a helmet. On Friday night, there was a two-vehicle collision in which a driver fled the scene. Police were able to immediately locate the driver, a 50-year-old woman, was charged with refusal.
Pictou County District RCMP are looking to identify a suspect in relation to a break and enter at the Pictou Legion on September 13th. Police say a man is believed to have entered the building on Veterans Dr. just before 7 a.m. and taken a quantity of cash from a register on the main floor. The man was wearing grey pants, a black or dark grey sweater, a black ballcap and camouflage-coloured Crocs. Police have released a photo as part of the investigation and are asking that anyone who can identify the man or who has information about the incident to contact the Pictou County District RCMP or Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says production at a facility in Pickering, Ontario, linked to a deadly Listeria outbreak, will stay on pause until the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is satisfied with renovations being done there. The federal agency says its investigation is now complete, and while Listeria was found where Silk and Great Value plant-based refrigerated beverages were produced, a “primary site” was not identified. Three deaths have been linked to the Listeria outbreak, with infections confirmed in Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and Alberta.
