Tourism Nova Scotia says the number of tourists in the Maritimes increased in 2024, leading to a recovery in the tourism industry. The tourism agency has tourism statistics for up to July 2024, and says the province has welcomed over one-million visitors. That is about the total number of visitors for 2023, the agency says. A spokesperson for the Halifax Port Authority says there were 201 cruise ships docking in Halifax this season.
A seniors’ advocacy group says it is “very much concerned” about Elections Nova Scotia’s decision not to send printed voter cards in the mail. Bill VanGorder, of the Canadian Association of Retired Persons, says the decision raises alarm bells because many seniors don’t use the internet regularly, and rely on the postal service for voting information. Elections Nova Scotia says the decision not to send the cards was difficult, but there is a voter awareness campaign in the works to tell voters where to cast their ballots.
Elections Nova Scotia is warning the public about an online phishing scam trying to collect personal information. It says the deceptive email is made to look like an official message from the elections agency. It asks users to click a link to provide personal information in order to receive an online ballot, although there is no online voting this election. The agency says the email should be treated as a bank scam, and the matter has been referred to the R-C-M-P.
A reminder from the Nova Scotia RCMP’s Commercial Crime Section for retailers that there’s a trend across the province with scammers using stolen or compromised credit cards to pay for high-volume or expensive orders. The RCMP says retailers should exercise extra caution when conducting sales over the phone, particularly in accepting credit card payments without the cardholder present. Recent incidents have included the fraudulent purchase of furniture, ATVs, tires, and other high-value items.
