Nova Scotia voters will elect their next government in today’s provincial election.
The Progressive Conservatives are seeking a second consecutive mandate after sweeping the Liberals from power in August 2021.
Issues such as the cost of living, a lack of affordable housing and the province’s ailing health-care system were prominent, but no single issue dominated.
At dissolution, the Progressive Conservatives held 34 seats in the 55-seat legislature and the Liberals held 14 seats, while the N-D-P had six and there was one Independent.
The polls are open today from 8am to 8pm.
The leaders of the three major political parties made their final election pitches on Monday. Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Houston said that if he’s given a second mandate it will strengthen his position to fight Ottawa on key issues impacting the province, including carbon pricing. N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender spoke at a local produce market in north-end Halifax, saying it’s an election about who you trust to make decisions in your best interest. Liberal Leader Zach Churchill revisited his party’s promises on making life more affordable for renters, pledging to establish a residential tenancies enforcement unit and a “rent bank” program, which would provide quick-turnaround, zero-interest loans to renters who can’t make monthly payments.
Roughly one thousand-450 boats in Canada’s largest lobster fishery are setting their traps this morning in southern Nova Scotia.
The annual “dumping day” for lobster fishing areas 33 and 34 is set for the final Monday of November, but there was a one-day delay this year due to rough weather.
Good weather is expected through the day, however, the boats that work in area 34 were allowed to leave a bit earlier as the weather is forecast to get a bit rougher this evening.
