Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to speak with U-S President Donald Trump about the trade war between the U-S and Canada.
Trump announced he would be speaking with leaders from Canada and Mexico ahead of the tariff start on Tuesday.
Canada is retaliating with 25 per cent tariffs of its own, targeting 155-billion-dollars worth of American goods, including alcohol, furniture and natural resources.
Trudeau says he has spoken with President Antonio Costa of the European Council, ahead of the Informal European Union leaders’ retreat today.
After Saturday’s tariff announcement by President Trump, Premier Tim Houston said Nova Scotia must ramp up its focus on finding new markets here at home with programs like Nova Scotia Loyal — and focus on developing our own resources, eliminate inter-provincial trade barriers and, look for international diversification.
In response to U.S. tariffs, Nova Scotia will take a number of steps, including limiting access to provincial procurement for American businesses. Houston says the Province will look for opportunities to cancel existing contracts and will maintain the option to reject bids outright because of President Trump’s unlawful tariffs.
Also, the cost of tolls at the Cobequid Pass will double for commercial vehicles from the United States, effective today (Monday). The Province is also directing the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation to remove all alcohol from the United States from its shelves, effective Tuesday.
The Nova Scotia Human Trafficking Unit has charged a Truro man with human trafficking offences. As part of an ongoing investigation, RCMP officers learned of an individual committing human trafficking offences in the Truro area. Last Wednesday, investigators arrested a 52-year-old man, and he’s been charged with Human Trafficking; Receiving a Financial Benefit from Human Trafficking; Procuring a Person to Provide Sexual Services; and Advertising Sexual Services.
