The first of four public information sessions is being held tonight regarding the draft Active Steps Active Transportation Plan. Active Steps was launched last spring to develop an Active Transportation Plan for the Town of Pictou and Municipality of Pictou County. After reviewing feedback from the initial engagement phase, the project team developed a Draft Active Transportation Plan. Public information sessions are being held to provide information and gather feedback on the draft. The first session is tonight from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Pictou Wellness Centre. A virtual session will be held February 25th; and then sessions will be held February 26th at the Town of Pictou Council Chambers, and February 27th at Scotsburn Fire Department.

Advocates and opposition parties say Nova Scotia’s new budget fails to adequately address the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in the province.
The Progressive Conservatives introduced a new 17.6-billion dollar budget on Tuesday, which made note of 100 million dollars in previously-announced funding for intimate-partner and gender-based violence.
Since October, six women in Nova Scotia have been killed in incidents of intimate-partner violence.
Carrie Low, a survivor of gender-based violence and advocate, says she felt let down when she saw that the budget does not include new funding for the prevention of intimate-partner violence or to support survivors.
The Nova Scotia government has given itself sweeping powers to fire the auditor general without cause — a move that is being described by a democracy watchdog as a threat to her office’s independence. Co-founder Duff Conacher of Democracy Watch says an omnibus bill that allows the dismissal of the auditor general without cause creates a political threat to her job. The tool would require two-thirds favour from all members of the legislature to move forward with firing the auditor general. Premier Tim Houston’s government is also trying to amend the Auditor General Act — hoping to establish a two-week minimum timeline for the auditor to submit a report before the government is required to release it to the public.
