New Liberal Leader Mark Carney is promising a “seamless” and “quick” transition as he gets ready to take the reins from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In the coming days, Carney will need to be sworn in as prime minister, name a new cabinet and sort out his plans for the coming federal election.

Carney is not an elected parliamentarian and has not said where he’ll run for a Commons seat.

He also addressed the Liberal caucus on Parliament Hill behind closed doors yesterday — a meeting Trudeau did not attend.

 

 

Markets in both the U-S and Canada plunged yesterday as the reality of a trade war between the two countries took further hold.

The T-S-X lost almost 400 points, while the blue-chip Dow was down almost 900 points, and the Nasdaq was four per cent lower.

U-S Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has said President Donald Trump will follow through on his 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum imports this week.

But the billionaire financier added that Trump’s most recent tariff threat against Canadian dairy and lumber won’t kick in until April.

 

 

The executive director of the Nova Scotia Seafood Alliance says the Chinese tariffs on seafood announced on Saturday are a “very strategic hit” on Atlantic Canada’s fish and seafood sector.

Kris Vascotto says it’s expected the resulting price volatility will affect the supply chain right down to the harvester.

Groups representing the region’s seafood sector say the pending 25 per cent tariffs from China add another layer of uncertainty to an industry already under threat of U-S duties.

Nova Scotia Health is hosting its annual provincial career fair later this month.  Representatives from various departments will be in 11 different communities across the province on March 27th to discuss career and volunteer opportunities with those interested.  Nova Scotia Health says its first career fair last April led to the hiring of more than 200 people with more than 17-hundred leads generated.  In New Glasgow, the fair will be held at Pictou County Wellness Centre from 10am to 7pm on March 27th.
