Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to “think big” and lead a government that represents all Canadians in his victory speech following Monday’s election.
Carney led the Liberals to a fourth mandate, and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre conceded to the Liberals early this morning, but noted the results are extremely close and he said change can sometimes take time. Poilievre lost his own seat, falling by about 38-hundred votes to the Liberal candidate.
After conceding defeat in his British Columbia riding of Burnaby Central, the N-D-P’s Jagmeet Singh says he will step down as party leader as soon as a new interim leader is chosen.
As for the local races, Central Nova incumbent Liberal Sean Fraser won re-election as he has about 51 percent of the vote, compared to 43 percent for Conservative Brycen Jenkins. Fraser has been the Central Nova MP since 2015 and has served in cabinet as a Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, and Minister of Housing Infrastructure and Communities.
In Cumberland-Colchester, with one poll still to report, Liberal Alana Hirtle leads by almost 12-hundred votes with 48.2 percent of the vote over the incumbent, Conservative Stephen Ellis who has 45.8 percent of the vote.
Liberal Jaime Battiste won in Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish with 51 percent of the vote as there are still some polls to report. Battiste won over Conservative Allan MacMaster, the former provincial MLA and Finance Minister, who resigned to run federally.
New Glasgow Regional Police have charged a Pictou County man after an incident Monday afternoon in which the man barricaded himself inside an apartment in New Glasgow. Shortly before 1:30pm, police responded to an apartment complex to conduct a well-being check. Shortly after police arrived, the man opened the door and sprayed an irritant in the officer’s face before barricading himself inside the apartment. The officer received medical attention and was later released. Multiple attempts to negotiate with the individual to get him to exit the apartment were unsuccessful and police secured the area and closed several streets as a precaution. Also, New Glasgow Academy was placed in a Hold and Secure to ensure student safety while the situation unfolded. Shortly before 4:00pm, the man exited the apartment complex and was taken into custody without further incident. The 36-year-old-man from Pictou County has been charged with Assaulting a Police Officer with a Weapon; and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose. He has been remanded into custody and will soon be appearing in Nova Scotia Provincial Court in Pictou.
Ceremonies were held across Atlantic Canada Monday as part of the National Day of Mourning to remember people who died from workplace injuries or illnesses. In Nova Scotia, Labour Minister Nolan Young was joined by the executives from the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and the provincial Workers’ Compensation Board at a remembrance event outside Province House. Nova Scotia recorded 20 deaths either at work or because of a person’s work in 2024. The Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada says that in 2023, there were 1,057 workplace fatalities across the country.
