Tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum heading into the U-S have doubled today to 50 per cent.
U-S President Donald Trump signed the order while calling it a “national security” move.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the tariff increase is unjustified.
The hike won’t apply to the U-K, as the U-S is working to finalize a separate trade deal with Britain.
Despite pre-existing tariffs, Canada remains the U-S’s top steel supplier, and industry leaders are warning the impact could be severe.
A new report argues the U-S trade war with Canada could provide a boost to this country’s domestic tourism industry. The Conference Board of Canada says its April travel intentions survey suggests about 27 per cent of Canadians are considering a U-S trip. @NS and its partners have relaunched a program that allows library patrons in several parts of the province to borrow and use mobile wireless hotspots at their homes. The initial pilot project, launched in 2023, was put on hold after one year while a new data provider was found. An agreement has been reached with Nova Scotia-based company D3 Tech, and hotspots are available at libraries to borrow for a set period. The hotspots can be borrowed from libraries throughout the province outside of the HRM, where similar programs already exist. That includes Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library.
