The New Glasgow Regional Police have shared a release from the Municipal Chiefs’ Caucus regarding the Nova Scotia Policing Review.
In reviewing the findings of the provincial police review and future policing plans, the Municipal Chiefs of Police found that municipal police services deliver many of the key priorities identified, including visible presence, quick response times, strong community connections, and specialized services through collaborative regional partnerships. The caucus says the Municipal Police Chiefs were surprised by the assertion that municipal agencies are lacking in some of these key priority areas, and that enhanced provincial RCMP presence is the sole solution. They caution against shifting to a model that centralizes all contracted services under provincial control – saying that approach risks reduced flexibility, delayed response times, and a move away from proven municipal collaboration.
A restored replica of the square-rigged sailing ship that sparked a wave of Scottish immigration to Nova Scotia 250 years ago re-launched on Saturday. The rebuilt hull of the Hector returned to the water during a ceremony at Pictou Harbour. The Ship Hector Society has spearheaded a four-million-dollar fundraising effort for the latest restoration. The ongoing rebuild will eventually transform the Hector into a fully working sailing vessel. Those efforts got a boost with the announcement Saturday of two generous donations: $1,000,000 from Sobeys Inc. and the Sobey Foundation, and an additional $250,000 from the David and Faye Sobey Foundation.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with his cabinet and Canada’s premiers, including Premier Tim Houston, to discuss U-S President Donald Trump’s latest tariff threat. On Thursday, Trump announced he would slap a 35-per cent tariff on Canadian goods starting August 1st. The Prime Minister’s Office announced there will be a cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the Canada-U-S trade negotiations. Carney said on Thursday his government will “steadfastly” defend workers and businesses, and will work to secure a trade deal by the revised deadline.
Premier Tim Houston is referring to U-S President Donald Trump’s tariffs as “childish” bullying behaviour, causing people on both sides of the border to suffer. Houston says the threat of 35 per cent tariffs as of August 1st is “illegal” and unnecessary at a time when Canada is working in good faith to reach a trade deal. The premier says the threats are why Canadians are not buying U-S products and cancelling trips to the U-S and also why Nova Scotia’s measures against U-S alcohol remain in place. Houston says the province will work harder to set up buy local programs and find new trading partners.
