A fire on the Holiday Island ferry three years ago has prompted a national investigation into ship fires and the responses to them. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada announced the investigation Wednesday in a report released on the fire on the ferry in July of 2022. The agency says there was confusion over who was responsible for the ferry’s safety after flames broke out in the engine room following a repair failure on its fuel injection system. The agency is recommending Transport Canada provide better guidance to reduce the risk of vessels operating without minimum safety requirements.

A new report from Canada’s national housing agency says Nova Scotia must double the number of housing starts in the province for the next 10 years in order to restore pre-pandemic affordability. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation economist Lukas Jasmin-Tucci says Nova Scotia should aim to hit 12-thousand-540 housing starts a year. He says housing projects in the province have not kept up with population growth over the past five years. Growth and Development Minister Colton LeBlanc says doubling the rate of new housing projects is achievable.
The Nova Scotia Law Enforcement Torch Run kicks off today in support of Special Olympics Nova Scotia and the Summer Games in Antigonish this weekend. The Annual Nova Scotia Law Enforcement Torch Run is being held this year in Pictou County, in conjunction with Michelin Torch Run. The partnership will have runners from law enforcement agencies and Michelin employees run throughout Pictou County to raise awareness of Special Olympics Nova Scotia and the Summer Games in Antigonish this weekend.
