The evacuation order was expanded twice on Sunday as the Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis County continues to grow.
Emergency alerts sent out in the afternoon and evening extended evacuations to include Highway 10 around Trout, Zwicker, and East lakes, Old Liverpool Road, Che-Boag-A-Nish Road, and West Dalhousie Road in Albany Cross. Residents from parts of Morse Road and Thorne Road were also ordered to leave earlier in the day.
The fire, which started August 13th, has already forced more than 100 homes to evacuate — affecting about 215 people. By Sunday evening, it was estimated at more than 32 square kilometres, though officials say thick smoke is making it hard to get an exact size.
Jim Rudderham with the Department of Natural Resources says conditions couldn’t be worse for firefighters: strong winds, high heat, no rain, and low humidity.
The fire has already crossed multiple roads, including West Dalhousie and Thorne, and has reached as far as Paradise Lake. The wildfire command post has now been moved to Bridgetown as a precaution.
Evacuees are being directed to the Bridgetown Fire Hall to register and get supports. Nova Scotia Power says electricity may be shut off in some areas so crews can work safely, while emergency officials are setting up sprinklers around homes and properties in case the fire advances further.
Environment Canada has issued an air quality warning for Annapolis County due to heavy smoke, and while rain is in the forecast Monday, Natural Resources says much more will be needed to make a difference.
