Firefighters are making progress on containing this season’s largest wildfire in the provine, but officials say the lack of rain means the Long Lake fire will keep burning for some time. Natural Resources Department spokesman Jim Rudderham says firefighters continue to make advances on the 84-square-kilometre fire south of Bridgetown. Rudderham confirmed yesterday that the fire hasn’t grown over the past few days, even though it is still considered out of control more than three weeks after it started. The fire destroyed 20 homes late last month and forced about one-thousand people to evacuate their homes, though most of those living on the eastern side of the fire were allowed to return on Wednesday.
The Nova Scotia government says its school lunch program is being expanded to all schools this fall. The government issued a statement saying all elementary, middle and junior high schools will be offered new menu options and easier ways to order food. The program is now being offered to more than 100-thousand students in 334 schools. The Education Minister, Brendan Maguire, says new menu options include chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese.
Figures released by Nova Scotia’s Opposition N-D-P show the province’s wait-list for public housing surpassed eight-thousand people in June – a jump of about 12-hundred people from last fall.
The updated numbers are contained in documents released to the N-D-P through a freedom of information request by the Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency.
The figures show a total of eight-thousand-267 people were waiting for public housing across the province as of June 27th.
N-D-P Leader Claudia Chender says the increase shows that many people have run out of options because they can’t afford to deal with rising rent.
