A reminder from the Town of New Glasgow that residents and business owners who wish to speak at the upcoming Community Safety Public Forum must pre-register their comments in advance. The Town says confirmed speakers will be contacted on or before September 30th. The Town of New Glasgow is hosting the Public Forum on Community Safety, Addressing the Impacts of Homelessness, Addiction and Mental Health on Wednesday, October 1st at 6:00 p.m. at the Glasgow Square Theatre. It says that in recent months, there have been escalating concerns regarding the growth of encampments, open drug use, safety in public spaces, and the operations of Viola’s Place. The Town says those challenges have contributed to heightened worries about safety, housing, and overall community well-being.

Politicians are set to return to the Nova Scotia legislature today for the opening of the fall sitting.
The governing Tories have been largely silent on the specifics of their legislative agenda for the sitting.
However, the Opposition N-D-P has said it will introduce legislation that would lower power bills by 10 per cent and protect private information.
The Liberals also say lowering power bills is a priority as well as pressing the government on the cost of living and reining in spending.
Nova Scotia is forecasting a record deficit of 1.2-billion dollars for the current fiscal year.
The figure released yesterday by Finance Minister John Lohr is significantly higher than the 697.5-million deficit projected in February’s budget.
Lohr says provincial revenues have dropped 44.9 million dollars due, in part, to decreases in population growth and consumer spending, while government spending is up by 503 million more than forecast, primarily in the health sector.
Lohr says the deficit figure is concerning, although he stopped short of saying whether the government would need to tighten spending.
A group of firefighters and emergency management professionals has been tapped to help create a new firefighter training program for Nova Scotia.
The province announced the establishment of the Nova Scotia Fire Training Advisory Committee yesterday.
Its 32 members will put together an interim basic firefighter training plan that covers everything from fire behaviour to rescuing people from crashed vehicles.
The province created the committee after an audit found serious safety and governance issues at the Nova Scotia Firefighters Training School earlier this summer.
The Town of New Glasgow is hosting the Culture Days Flag Raising Ceremony today at 12:00 p.m. at Glasgow Square Gazebo. It is open to everyone to attend.
