Firefighters are working to contain a late-season wildfire that has prompted the evacuation of over 200 homes and other buildings in the Annapolis Valley.
Officials with the Municipality of the County of Kings estimated yesterday that the Lake George fire, fuelled by dry and windy conditions, was about 150 hectares in size and burning out of control.
The Emergency Measures Coordinator says that as of yesterday, 275 civic addresses have been evacuated, and another 56 are under an alert to be evacuated at a moment’s notice.
Meanwhile, the province’s Department of Natural Resources says the cause of the fire is likely human, although an exact cause has not been determined.
R-C-M-P say they are investigating a fatal house fire in Antigonish County. Police have released few details about the fire that occurred early Saturday. When officers arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, and after the fire was extinguished, remains were found inside the home. At this time, police say they do not believe the fire to be criminal in nature, but the investigation is ongoing.
The provincial government’s intent to make it illegal to block forest access roads on Crown lands is being dismissed as heavy-handed and an attempt to ignore Mi’kmaq rights. Several presenters spoke out in opposition Monday during an appearance before the legislature’s public bills committee hearing on the Protecting Nova Scotians Act. Michelle Paul, a Mi’kmaq water protector and land defender, told the committee the bill was written without consultation or consideration of treaty rights and should be withdrawn. Leitha Haysom, a former councillor with the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, says any move that would criminalize peaceful protest is “dangerous and destructive.”
Construction is well underway on the new RCMP Pictou County District Detachment in Stellarton, with completion expected in fall 2026.
The facility is designed to support efficient policing and better serve with improved accessibility, and space for public and operational needs. Built on reclaimed mining land, the detachment is a net zero carbon project.
