There’s a Snow Squall Watch that has been issued for Pictou and Antigonish Counties. Overnight tonight and continuing into Friday afternoon, snow squalls are expected to develop and we could see 15 to 25cm of snow in some areas in those snow squalls.
New Glasgow Regional Police contained an area on Townsend Avenue in New Glasgow Wednesday night as they were on-scene at an apartment complex conducting an ongoing investigation. Shortly after 8:00pm, Police advised of a police presence in the area and asked the public to stay away from the area to allow officers to investigate – but indicated there was no threat to public safety. Shortly after 8:30, New Glasgow Regional Police reported that one person was taken into custody.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says the minimum wage needed to cover basic necessities is more than 27 dollars an hour. It’s saying Nova Scotia’s 50-cent planned increase next year, bringing the total to 17-dollars an hour, isn’t enough. The two 25-cent-increases are planned in April and October. The C-C-P-A says minimum wage increases should consider factors such as rent costs and food inflation, so more workers can afford to live in the province.
The premier is calling for an investigation into how Nova Scotia Power has handled a cyberattack. Tim Houston says in a letter to the chair of the Nova Scotia Energy Board that he wants the regulator to look into the way the private utility has billed customers since a system breach in March. Nova Scotia Power has said the personal and financial data belonging to 280-thousand ratepayers was accessed by an unauthorized party as early as March 19th. The utility has said it can no longer rely on remote meter readings and has chosen to estimate electricity consumption for some customers’ billing, which some customers say has resulted in inflated bills and consecutive charges within short periods.
About 14.5 million people visited Parks Canada sites between June 20th and September 2nd. That’s when the Canada Strong Pass was in effect. It offered free Parks Canada admission, free national museum admission to children 17 and under, and a 50 per cent discount on national museum admission for those aged 18 to 24. The government is renewing the Canada Strong Pass later this month, from December 12th to January 15th.
St. FX celebrated one of its long-standing traditions Wednesday, as 1,009 graduating students received their coveted X-Rings during the annual X-Ring Ceremony held on campus. The event once again took place on the Feast Day of St. Francis Xavier a date deeply tied to the university’s heritage. The X-ring was first presented in 1958.
