A Snowfall Warning remains in effect for Pictou County with this latest storm system giving us near 20cm total, with a further 5 of that expected through this morning. The snow is expected to gradually ease later this morning or early in the afternoon. With winds gusting to 70kh, there will be reduced visibility in blowing snow.
Snow that’s expected today across Nova Scotia has forced the cancellation of a Groundhog Day event with a famous prognosticating rodent. The provincial government says the annual February 2nd event at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park is cancelled due to the forecast. In a statement announcing the cancellation, the government says Shubenacadie Sam will not see a shadow, which — according to folklore — means an early spring.
A 36-year-old man who was reported missing on Sunday by Pictou County District RCMP, having last been seen in West River Station, has been located safe. The RCMP thanks the public for assisting through social media shares and offering tips.
The Nova Scotia government is urging the provincial energy board to reject the province’s largest private utility’s request for a rate increase. The Department of Energy says the energy board should reject Nova Scotia Power’s proposed rate hike because the company failed to prove the proposed rates are just and reasonable. Nova Scotia Power has proposed residential rate increases of about eight per cent by next year. If they are approved, the first 3.8 per cent increase would be effective retroactive to January 1st and the second 4.1 per cent hike would come into effect the first day of 2027.
The African Heritage Month Flag Raising Ceremony that was scheduled for today, was cancelled due to the weather conditions forecast for today — and instead, the flag was raised Saturday. The African Heritage Month Proclamation Ceremony is being held on Wednesday at 11:45 a.m. at Summer Street Industries.
