Nova Scotia’s credit rating has been downgraded by S-and-P Global. The credit rating agency says it expects the government’s budgetary performance this year will fall short of expectations. The agency cited higher-than-budgeted spending on seniors and health care. Premier Tim Houston’s government projected a deficit of about 697-million dollars last spring, which as of December had ballooned to nearly 1.3-billion dollars.
Nova Scotia’s power grid operator has inked an agreement with N-B Power to secure capacity from a planned power plant. The deal gives Nova Scotia the option to contract up to 100 megawatts of fact-acting capacity from a new facility planned for Centre Village, about 20 kilometres north of Sackville, New Brunswick. Nova Scotia can join the project for a 10-year term starting as early as 2028, when the plant is expected to open. The grid operator says the power will help Nova Scotia transition to renewable energy, picking up the slack when green options like wind and solar are not available.
A planned increase of the G-S-T credit and a one-time payment to Canadians will cost the federal government an estimated 12.4-billion dollars over five years. That from the Office of the Parliamentary Budget Officer, whose estimate is slightly higher than Ottawa’s initial projection. Ottawa promised a 25 per cent hike to the G-S-T credit over the next five years and a one-time payment in the spring worth 50 per cent of the credit in order to help those with lower incomes deal with high grocery prices. Conservative M-Ps are expected to support the affordability measure.
