Environment Canada has issued a Snowfall Warning for Pictou County. There is the potential for 15 to 20 cm of snow from this morning through until Thursday morning. A low pressure system will track south of Nova Scotia today bringing snow to much of the province. Snow will begin over western Nova Scotia this morning then move eastward across the province through the day reaching eastern mainland Nova Scotia by this evening. Snow will taper to flurries tonight over western Nova Scotia but will likely persist into Thursday over eastern Nova Scotia.
A shooting in the community of Tumbler Ridge, BC has left 10 people dead and more than two-dozen others injured. The dead include seven people at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, as well as the female suspect. And two people were found dead at an area home, also believed to be connected to the attack. Mounties say about 100 students and staff were evacuated from the school after police received a report of an active shooter at the school. Police arrived at the school within two minutes of receiving the call, and the community then went into a lockdown that lasted several hours.
The Sipekne’katik First Nation says it is declaring a state of emergency over what its chief and council are calling an escalating crisis of addiction and illicit drugs in the community. In a statement, the First Nation says its council moved to begin the process of declaring a state of emergency during a meeting Sunday, as the community deals with too many overdoses and tragedies. It did not provide details of how a state of emergency declaration would be applied. The First Nation says it has notified the R-C-M-P that it will be supporting a 20-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people selling illicit drugs in the community.
New Glasgow Regional Police are hosting a Seniors Police Academy — a classroom program designed to provide an understanding of Crime Prevention and Police. The program consists of a series of classes and discussions, held 5 times throughout the year, concluding with a graduation ceremony. Participants will learn, among other benefits, crime prevention strategies for protecting themselves from crime.
